Black Actors struggle over the past 50 years:

Hattie McDaniel was born on the 10th June 1893 and died on the 26th of October 1952. Hattie was a actress, singer-songwriter and comedian for 32 years, during which time she faced a lot of discrimination. She was born to parents who were both slaves and had 12 siblings. When she was a child, she was sold as a slave from Virginia to Tennessee.

She was the first black woman to perform on the radio in the USA as well as being the fist black woman to win an Academy Award for her role of Scarlett O'Hara in the film "Gone with the Wind" in 1940. She wasn't allowed to actually attend the premier of the movie though, just because of her colour and ethnicity. The movie executives had to beg for her to be let into the Ambassador Hotel ceremony as they knew it wasn't right her not being there, but although their request was accepted she had to sit at the back away from her fellow nominees on a table for 2 with her partner.
Even after she had died people were still racist against her by denying her wish to be buried in The Hollywood Cemetery, again due to her race. Her Oscar trophy also mysteriously disappeared from Howard University, which was left to the school in her will.

She achieved many things in her life whilst still facing discrimination from people all around her.

Sarah Jane Adventures too far?

How do you apply representation to your TV show?

Choose and define character.

I want an 18 year old Latino girl to star in my advert. She will have long, black, curled hair and live with her mum and 2 younger brothers. She will drive a black mini and work in a high end retail store, she earns a fair amount of money but is looking to go into acting one day to pursue her dreams.
