Tuesday 18th September 2018: In todays lesson with Justin, we learnt about the different types of sound in film and how/why it's used. We watched clips from different films to see ways in which they used sound to create a certain effect or mood; sound is a vital part of film as it helps the audience to get a better understanding of what's happening and what the mood should be like. Diegetic: This is sound that happens in the film world, so sounds that would be heard by the characters in the film, such as a gun shot or dialogue. The film "The hateful 8" uses a lot of dialogue as it's a very communication based film. This is something that both them and the audience would hear throughout the film. Non-diegetic: This is sound that is only heard by the audience, such as music or a voice over. This can be used to emphasize whats going on in a scene or to create tension, for example, the film Jaws uses a song that slowly speeds up so that the scene gets built ...

Tuesday 11th September 2018: Shot Types: Films use many different shot types for many different reasons, such as clearly showing what the audience should be focusing on, showing important detail and even showing different perspectives of something. Listed below are some of the different shot types used in films. Extreme long shot:ELS This shows a wide view of a complete setting, such as a mountain area of landscape. It is used to show just how big an area is or to show how grand it is etc. If a human was to be shown in this shot, they would be barely viable as the shot is to emphasis the size of their surroundings. Long shot:LS Whilst this is still showing the complete scene, it is closer than an extreme long shot is. A person, if shown in this, would be completely visible and fits well within the frame. Friday 14th September 2018 Pixels: FPS-Frames Per Second:   25 is the standard in England. 2 fields per frame. A single frame is scanned twice. Interlaced  Progressive avoids jaggies 50 fields per second (50HZ) P.A.L: Phase Alternating Line Use bins to organise clips to avoid confusion and clutter whilst editing film.

Friday 14th September 2018: During this lesson today with Luke we looked at how to understand a piece of media text, such as films, TV shows. posters, magazines etc. We first looked at the Pulp Fiction movie poster together as a class to see the codes and conventions of it. We then found a film poster of our choice and wrote about that. I chose the Film Django Unchained as this is the most recent film I have watched.  Django Unchained: This is a mid-western/action film. I know this by the use of cowboy hats and guns that are shown on the cover. The character of Jamie Foxx is at the center of the poster which shows he is the leading character, but Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz are on either side, showing that whilst they are still vital characters, the story is based on Jamie Foxx's character.  The splats of blood around them and the guns they are holding shows that this will be an action film, as it portrays violence and implies there will be gun...

Day 1: Today was the first day of college. I was introduced to my new class and did a treasure hunt with a small group of people to go round the college to find our way about. We met all of the teaching staff as well as all the TSO's and other members of staff that we will be with on the course. As this is my second year of media I already know all the teaching staff, but it was nice to meet new people and get to know everyone before the course begins next week. After we had met everyone and spent a few hours getting to know the people and the course, we were given a task to do in small groups. We were given a different object in all of our separate groups to make a short film with said object.
